Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the new parliament building and installed a historic sceptre ‘Sengol’ near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair. A puja and a multi-faith prayer were held on the occasion. He also unveiled a commemorative plaque for the new building. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Adheenam seers were present at the event. The seers handed over the ‘Sengol’ to PM Modi who walked into the new Parliament building and installed it.

The ‘Sengol’, a Chola-era spectre made of silver with a coat of gold, is a symbol of the transfer of power from the British in 1947. Today, it was installed near the chair of the Lok Sabha Speaker.

The protesting wrestlers said late on Saturday evening that there was a lot of “pressure” to call off the Mahila Mahapanchayat they have planned in front of the new Parliament building today, but they will go ahead with the “peaceful” march come what may.

“We will go ahead with the Mahila Mahapanchayat, come what may. Our supporters have been stopped at a gurudwara in Ambala where they were supposed to stay tonight. It has now been converted into a cantonment,” alleged Vinesh Phogat.
