Sturgeon set to survive any confidence vote after Greens signal support

Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon looks likely to survive a threatened vote of no confidence after the Scottish Greens signalled on Thursday that they would not back Conservative plans for such a move.

The Conservatives this week lodged a confidence motion against Sturgeon over her minority Scottish National party administration’s handling of complaints against her predecessor Alex Salmond. But analysts said the pressure on her had eased following her eight-hour appearance before a parliamentary inquiry on Wednesday.

The SNP has been rocked by Salmond’s allegations that his successor and former protégée broke the ministerial code and that her closest associates plotted to drive him from public office. Sturgeon strongly denied these claims under oath to the parliamentary committee.
