At least six dead in explosion at Tamil Nadu fireworks factory

At least six workers of a fireworks factory were killed in an explosion at the unit in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district on Friday, PTI reported, citing the police. Initial reports said at least 10 persons were also injured in the incident.

Ten firefighters have been sent to the spot to douse the fire in the factory at the Acchankulam village. The explosion happened when some chemicals were being mixed to produce fireworks, the police said. A rescue operation is underway.

The police said that it was difficult to identify the bodies since they were completely charred, reported The New Indian Express. Fire officers said that 10 rooms of the factory have been destroyed in the explosion.

“Around 50 labourers had been working in the unit when the accident took place,” said District Fire Officer Ganesan. District Collector R Kannan is also at the area to oversee the rescue operation.

Those severely injured have been admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for treatment….
