Bilkis Bano convicts released as they had completed 14 years’ sentence, showed good behaviour in jail: Gujarat govt tells SC

New Delhi: The Gujarat government on Monday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court defending its decision to grant remission to the 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gang-rape case.
Justifying the release of the convicts of the Bilkis Bano gang-rape case, the BJP-led Gujarat government told the top court that they were granted remission as they had completed 14 years in prison and during that time period their “behaviour was found to be good”.

The Supreme Court had on August 25 sought response from the Gujarat government on a plea challenging the remission granted to the 11 convicts.

In the affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the state government took the decision to release the 11 convicts after considering the proposals under the policy of 1992 remission policy to release the prisoners.
