Compliance with rules by bulk waste generators poor

‘Most of them either dispose of waste in dumper bins or hand it over to conservancy workers’

Bulk waste generators in the city have shown poor compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, which mandate setting up of composting units to process their biodegradable waste.

Bulk waste generators include hotels, restaurants, hospitals, schools, apartments and other commercial establishments generating an average of 100 kilograms of waste every day. A total of 1,031 bulk waste generators have been identified by Madurai Corporation, says City Health Officer P. Kumaraguruparan. At least 100 tonnes of waste is collected from bulk waste generators every day.

As per rules, bulk waste generators must segregate waste at source, process biodegradable waste within their premises and develop a system to reuse compost or biogas thus produced. Non-biodegradable waste must be given to the Corporation.
