The very severe cyclonic storm Yaas has weakened into a severe cyclonic storm as of 1.40 p.m. on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department said on Twitter.
Yaas has pounded the beach towns in north Odisha and West Bengal as it hit the coast around 9 a.m. with a wind speed of 130-140 kmph, inundating the low-lying areas amid a storm surge, officials said.
It is likely to move to Jharkhand with a lesser intensity by midnight, they said.
