Maharashtra Police arrest Union minister Narayan Rane for remarks about slapping chief minister

The Maharashtra Police on Tuesday arrested Union minister Narayan Rane for his remarks on slapping Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for not knowing the year of India’s independence, PTI reported.

His comment has triggered a massive controversy in the state.

Four first information reports were filed against the Bharatiya Janata Party minister for the comment, according to India Today. On Tuesday, Nashik Police Commissioner Deepak Pandey issued a warrant for his arrest.

A court in Ratnagiri district on Tuesday rejected an anticipatory bail petition filed by the minister, India Today reported.

The Union minister has approached the Bombay High Court challenging the FIRs and seeking protection from arrest, PTI reported.

Rane’s lawyer Aniket Nikam mentioned the petition before a division bench, seeking that it should be heard urgently. The court, however, said that mentioning of the petition was not allowed and asked him to follow the proper procedure.
