Maithripala Sirisena Should Take Responsibility for Easter Sunday Attack, Says Ex-police Chief

Former Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena should take responsibility for the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings that claimed the lives of over 250 people, ex-police chief Pujith Jayasundara has told a panel probing the attack, according to media reports. On April 21, 2019, Easter Sunday, nine suicide bombers belonging to the local Islamic extremist group National Thawheed Jamaat (NTJ) carried out a series of blasts that tore through three churches and as many luxury hotels in the island nation, killing 258 people, including 11 Indians, and injuring over 500 people.

Sri Lankan police have arrested over 200 suspects in connection with the bombings. Links between the NTJ and the Islamic State (IS) were later established.
