Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan on Wednesday called on the people displaced by the Coimbatore Corporation’s anti-encroachment drive at Rathinapuri HUDCO Colony along Sanganur canal, and extended her support for securing alternative accommodation.
She offered condolences to the family that had lost a one-storey house that had collapsed during the process of construction of a retaining wall for the canal two days ago. Ms. Vanathi urged the civic body to help out the hundreds of displaced people considering their predicament of having nowhere to go after constructing houses along the embankment with their hard-earned money and living there for decades.
The affected people have contested the claim of government authorities on allotment of houses.
The authorities, while directing residents to move out of 19 houses, had not cared to provide proper shelter to the displaced people who were now pushed into a situation of living in the households of neighbours, she said.
