The attack took place near the banks of the Tungabhadra River when a group of Indian travellers and the Israeli woman were stargazing. According to the police complaint, the accused initially approached them asking for petrol and demanded Rs 100. When the group refused, the attackers turned violent, assaulting the travellers and sexually assaulting the two women.
Three of the male travellers—Daniel from the United States, Pankaj from Maharashtra, and Bibash from Odisha—were pushed into a nearby canal. While two of them managed to swim to safety, one drowned, with his body recovered on Saturday.
