Dehradun, Feb 07: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Sunday announced Rs 4 lakh compensation for those killed by floods in the state, after a Himalayan glacier broke and swept away a hydroelectric dam down the Dhauli Ganga river valley on Sunday.
Rawat said seven bodies were recovered and at least 125 were missing.
Homes along the way were also swept away as the waters rushed down the mountainsides in a raging torrent. There were fears of damage in human settlements downstream, including in heavily populated areas. Many villages were evacuated and people taken to safer areas.
By evening, it became clear that downstream areas were safe.
