CHENNAI: A verbal battle has begun in Tamil Nadu over the elimination of the National Eligibility Cumulation Entrance Test (NEET), with the ruling DMK and its supporters expecting Governor R.N. Ravi to sign a bill repealing the test.
The Tamil Nadu government is hoping for a favourable response from the Governor since it believes the new bill is based on accurate data that can be measured, as well as a provision for reservation of seats in medical colleges for Government school students.
“We had created a panel led by Justice (rtd) A.K.Rajan of the Madras High Court, and the report of the commission is based on proper data as to why NEET ought to be scrapped,” DMK leader and state health minister Ma Subramanian said. The AIADMK, on the other hand, is not impressed, and former chief minister and Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Edappady K. Palaniswami has questioned the state government’s decision to cancel NEET, a national level competitive examination.
