The future of travel is (almost) here. It has the potential to rock the travel industry to its core and will change the way we travel forever. Hypersonic travel is set to revolutionise global air travel and could see flights from Sydney to London taking just two hours, shaving a huge 21 hours off this famously long journey.
The latest trial engine hit the target speed of Mach 7.5 (the equivalent of 5760 miles per hour or 9269 kilometres per hour) – more than seven times the speed of sound. For a jet to classify as hypersonic, it must travel at a minimum of Mach 5 or five times the speed of sound. The trial was conducted in Australia at the largest land testing site in the world using a supersonic combustion engine.
