China’s government mouthpiece The Global Times has released a scathing response to its “jealous” critics after the country was heavily condemned for the rocket debris that plummeted to Earth.
Fears were high over the weekend as debris from China’s Long March 5B hurtled towards Earth before reportedly breaking up over the Indian Ocean, near the Maldives.
Chinese state media claimed the rocket debris landed at longitude 72.47 degrees east and latitude 2.65 degrees north on Sunday afternoon (AEST) after being launched just over a week ago.
The situation resulted in heavy criticism, with NASA Administrator Bill Nelson accusing China of “failing to meet responsible standards regarding their space debris”.
Other experts also called into question China’s decision to allow such an event to occur, claiming it could have had dire consequences.
