Hurricane Ida: Deadly flooding hits New York City, New Jersey

The remnants of Hurricane Ida caused record flooding and a rare state of emergency in several US states with at least 16 people killed.

At least 16 people have been killed in the US Northeast, including a family of three with a two-year-old boy who drowned in a New York City basement.

Eight people were killed in New York City in Brooklyn and Queens, while a man in his seventies died in his car in Passaic, New Jersey, after his vehicle became submerged.

NBC reports that five residents of an apartment complex in Elizabeth, New Jersey, also died. A 19-year-old man died in Maryland when a river burst its banks and flooded nearby homes.

Streets turned into rivers while water cascaded down subway platforms, flooding tracks, as the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority effectively shut down services.

“I’m 50 years old and I’ve never seen that much rain ever,” said Metodija Mihajlov whose basement of his Manhattan restaurant was flooded with three inches of water.
