There will soon be fewer empty seats on U.S. military planes taking off from Kabul, according to the Biden administration, which announced Friday that more countries will temporarily host Afghans and Americans airlifted from Afghanistan and that it is intensifying its work to help Americans reach the Kabul airport, which is controlled by the U.S. but surrounded by the Taliban.

A dozen countries will take in Afghans, Americans and others airlifted while they await the next stage in their journey, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said at a press briefing.

The State Department has also set up a new task force to reach more Americans in Afghanistan, Price said, and help them and any family members figure out how to get to the Kabul airport.
